1 on 1 Talk with Thierry

Jubee:
So, Hey, hi guys. My name is Jubee with Linux For Jobs. I’m here with Thierry. He’s an instructor here and way more than an instructor at Linux for Jobs, he’s also a System Admin at NOAA. So today I wanted to talk about something in particular, and you always say that a system admin is nothing without his notes. And what do you mean?

Thierry:
The way I see this field, the field is so huge and you cannot know everything in your head. You may come across an issue today and pretty much should dig into Google to find the answer. But the minute you find the answer, you have to write it down because two months later you may come across the same issue again.

Thierry:
So your notes is pretty much your best friend. You’re not a good system admin without your notes, because you don’t have the brain power to remember every single details about fixing an issue, but your notes is. Once you find that fix, you write it down.

Jubee:
Yes. But let me ask you this though, and this is to give context to people who are considering this, but you need to have notes, but you have to have a base knowledge about, because you’re going to show up in the interview, you cannot show up at your notes. You see what I mean? Tell me the difference between interview where you want to showcase your knowledge and the work where, yeah, you can have notes. So what do you tell the guys who actually are in the interview process?

Thierry:
The interview process and after getting a job is to two different beasts.
You go into interview like you have stuff in your resume so they cannot ask a question that’s not on your resume.
You have to prepare yourself for the interview. So what’s on your resume, you have to talk about what you know about your resume. But in your job, they’re not going to say like, “Hey, that’s not working, what do you do?” There’s so many different scenarios you cannot push these things.
So for a job, for example, you can know let’s say three or four scenarios about that issue, but they cannot ask you how to do it because there’s so many ways to do it. But for an interview, you prepare yourself for the interview.
The question you put on your resume. If you’d say you know about like NFS Shares, you have to be prepared to answer a question about NFS Share.

Jubee:
So basically you still need a base bank of knowledge. Your notes help you build on that. Properly store it, properly access it when you need it, but you need a base knowledge. You need to still put in the study and stuff like that.

Thierry:
Of course. Before you even look for a job, you need to know what you’re talking about.
So you need to get ready for the interview first and throughout your career you build a Wiki page for yourself. You build your own documentation, because if I’m working for NOAA now and tomorrow I have a job working for NIH, for example, my notes that I build from NOAA going to help me at NIH. But getting to the interview with NIH is totally different.
