Can you tell us about your new role and what your day to day work will look like?
My title is Systems Administrator. I’ll be working in an environment that combines Windows and Linux.
My responsibilities will include system administration, supporting Windows and Linux servers, working with cloud technology, and handling some identity and access management tasks.
What was your background before Yellow Tail Tech, and what made you decide to make a change?
I’ve worked in IT since 2020, so I already had experience in the industry.
I reached a point where I needed a change because what I had been doing was not working. I was earning certifications, but I was not getting the practical experience I needed.
I believed Yellow Tail Tech could give me the opportunity to build that experience and learn how to apply my knowledge.
What was the most challenging part of the program?
The most challenging part was staying motivated and consistent.
Because I’ve worked with computers for a long time, the technical material was not necessarily the problem. Technology had already become second nature to me.
The challenge was practicing every day. You have to keep working on your skills if you want to improve. Staying consistent and motivated throughout that process was probably the hardest part for me.
What technical skill from the program do you expect to use most in your new role?
Linux.
My new job includes both Windows and Linux environments. The Linux skills I developed through Yellow Tail Tech and my Red Hat certifications will probably be used every day in my new role.
The structure of the Lnx for Jobs program helped me prepare to use those skills in a professional environment.
What mindset or professional habit will you bring into your new role?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned throughout my career is to find a way to add value.
If a company does not have enough automation, look for ways to introduce automation. If the documentation needs improvement, help create better documentation.
You do not want to limit yourself to following instructions. If you notice an issue or see an opportunity to improve something, be proactive and find a way to contribute.
My biggest lesson is simple: try to add value somewhere.
What advice would you give someone who is hesitant about joining Yellow Tail Tech?
Join Yellow Tail Tech, trust the process, and pay attention to the details.
Do not get caught up in attending classes every week and simply going through the motions. I started doing that at one point, and it affected me later.
Take good notes. Ask questions. Focus on understanding what you are learning and how you will use it.
The same advice applies to the apprenticeship. Do not complete the tickets just to finish them. Document everything and make sure you understand the material because you will need it later.
Learn the material and pay attention to the details.

How do you expect your work life to change in your new role?
Before becoming a Systems Administrator, I worked as a field technician supporting prison units.
My work involved being onsite, running cables, working in attics, and helping plan projects such as running fiber. It was very physical work.
In my new role, I’ll be working in more of an office setting. Instead of relying as much on physical labor, I’ll be using my technical knowledge and problem solving skills at the keyboard.
That will be the biggest difference between my previous role and my new one.
What else would you like current and future learners to know?
Hands on experience is king.
I’ve worked in IT since 2020, and I have earned several certifications beyond Red Hat. What I have learned is that you can continue earning certifications, but they will not help you during an interview if you cannot explain what you know or demonstrate how to perform the work.
As you earn your certifications, set aside time to complete projects that give you practical experience.
The apprenticeship provides valuable experience, but you should not rush through it. Pay attention to every task, document what you do, and make sure you understand the process.
Create a system that allows you to prepare for certifications while also building experience through projects. Both are important, but you need to be able to apply what you have learned.
