I hear you have some exciting news, and I’m hoping that you’ll share it with us all.
My exciting news is that I have received and accepted a job offer for the position of System Admin with The Power, which I’m very excited to start within the next week. Ready to take on some new challenges.
I’m guessing that the education you received here at Yellow Tail Tech worked?
I went from not knowing how to do any of the stuff that we learned before Yellow Tail Tech, to just knowing how to use a computer for everyday things. But with Yellow Tail Tech, I learned how to understand and fix issues that come up, and I got to learn something new. I didn’t know anything about Linux at all.
Other than using computers, you had no technical background then?
No. Most of my time before Yellow Tail Tech had been in a medical field background. I didn’t know anything about Linux. But going through the courses and the classes, I learned a ton. They were great.
What was it about Linux that attracted you in the first place?
I already knew how to use Windows and similar operating systems, but learning Linux was a new skill I was interested in acquiring. Yellow Tail Tech made it possible for me to learn that.
How did the interview process compare to the mock interviews and prep we did?
I’m a nervous person to begin with, and interviews aren’t my favorite thing. But I made it through them!
The mock interviews definitely helped me prepare and get ready for the real thing, which was great and helped me tremendously. When it came time for the actual interview, I wasn’t as nervous. I had my stuff ready, and it ended up being one of the best interviews of my life.
Isn’t it kind of nice when you take away that fear of the unknown, and you’re not going into it blind?
Exactly.
You decided to make a change, you nailed it on your first interview, didn’t you?
That was my first interview out of all the applications I had put in. First interview, first round. I liked them, they liked me—it just worked.
I wanted to ask if you had any advice for current apprentices who are about to start their own interview and job search process.
Even though you might have hardships during the internship process, buckle down and get through it. And afterwards, don’t let yourself drift away just because you’re done with the apprenticeship.
Get your applications out there, and don’t be discouraged if you get rejected. I’ve gotten rejections too.
What advice would you have for people like yourself, those with no technical background?
If it’s something you know you want to do, or even if you’re just scared of making a big change like I was, just do it. Jump in and do it. You won’t regret it. This is opening up a whole new world for me, and I know it will for them too.
What are you going to do this weekend as you get ready for your first day in your new job on Monday?
I recently received my equipment since I’ll be working remotely, I’m going to be setting that up and getting ready for my orientation on Monday.
How has your financial life changed now that you’re starting this new job?
Let’s just say, I feel like I won’t have to be strict on my budget.
