Information technology is not a single career. It includes system administration, data center operations, cloud computing, cybersecurity, technical support, software development, database administration, networking, and many other paths.
The latest projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimate approximately 317,700 openings in computer and information technology occupations each year from 2024 through 2034. However, the required education, experience, and technical skills differ considerably between roles.
That is why preparing for an IT career should begin with a target—not a random list of courses.
1. Choose a Specific IT Career Path
Before deciding what to study, identify the kind of work you want to perform.
Start by asking:
- Do I enjoy working with operating systems and servers?
- Am I interested in physical hardware and data centers?
- Would I rather manage cloud infrastructure?

6. Choose Certifications Strategically
A certification should support your career target. It should not be chosen solely because it is popular or appears on a list of high-paying credentials.
Before committing to an exam, confirm:
- Whether employers request it for your target role
- Whether the exam tests practical or theoretical knowledge
- Which experience level it is designed for
- Whether the objectives match the skills you are learning
- How often the certification must be renewed

- Transferable experience from previous jobs

Avoid presenting yourself as an expert in tools you have only encountered briefly. Be specific about what you can perform independently and what you are still learning.
8. Practice Interviewing and Apply Strategically
Technical interviews may assess more than whether you remember the correct command. Employers may want to understand how you investigate a problem, communicate uncertainty, document your work, and respond when your first solution fails.
Prepare to:
- Explain your troubleshooting process
- Describe your projects clearly
- Answer behavioral questions
