A database administrator is responsible for directing and performing all activities related to maintaining a successful database environment. In addition, database administrators also have certain skill sets that are required in their everyday duties.

There are specified types of database administrators, and they are:
- System DBA – System DBA on more technical issues, rather than business-related ones. The arcane technical details of how the database is installed, configured and modified are what the system DBA focuses on. Some of their tasks are installing new versions and applying fixes and setting and tuning system parameters.
- Database architect – Database architects design databases and structures for new and existing applications. In addition, model logical data, and produce backup and recovery strategies for newer databases.
- Application DBA – The Application DBA is proficient in writing and debugging complex SQL and will understand the best ways to incorporate database requests into application programs. Moreover, the Application DBA manages and refreshes test data for application development teams.
Responsibilities of A Database Administrator
The database administrator’s responsibilities depend on their speciality and the kind of work they have.
However, the general responsibilities of a database administrator include the following:
- Data administration – Data administration is the task of separating the business aspects of data management from the technology; this is where the role derives its name from. This task aligns more with business rather than the technological side.
- Database management – If you become a database administrator, you will manage the database. You will have to ensure that the data in it remains consistent, and is defined clearly, and the users of the system can access it in a way that is convenient for them and their needs.
- Database security and disaster recovery – This term pertains to actions that need to be taken after emergencies. Some emergencies occasionally happen, because life can be pretty uneventful. Some emergencies that require database security and disaster recovery are earthquakes, fires, vandalism, and theft.
- Ensure accurate application design for database access – One of the most important responsibilities of DBAs is to make user data and information available to system users – in a form that suits them. To meet this goal, DBAs collaborate and work with application developers to ensure accurate and efficient application design for database access.
